Medical Conditions at SchoolA medical conditions at school policy

Properly implemented and regularly evaluated and updated, a medical conditions policy will ensure children and young people with medical conditions at your school can:

  • be healthy
  • stay safe
  • enjoy and achieve
  • make a positive contribution
  • achieve economic well-being.

Ideally, a medical conditions policy should be a standalone policy to ensure it receives due attention within your school, but it can also be integrated into the school’s current health, first aid, health & safety or healthy schools policies.

If your school already has a related policy or one that refers to elements covered in the framework (for example, your school may already have a policy on the storage of medicines, or an asthma or anaphylaxis policy) then this can be integrated into your new medical conditions policy.

All policies should be developed taking into consideration up-to-date legislation and guidance. At the time of publication (September 2007), resources to reference from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF, previously known as the Department for Education and Skills) and the Department of Health include:

  • Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Years Settings
  • Implementing the Disability Discrimination Act in Schools and Early Years Settings
  • Healthy Schools frameworks
  • Every Child Matters; Change for Children
  • Including Me (published by the DfES and the Council for Disabled Children).
